4 FACTS ABOUT 1099 CHANGES
Familiarize yourself with these four facts about
1099 legislation changes that will help you answer questions from
clients and help them be prepared.
1. Rental property owners are now required
to file a 1099-MISC for $600+ paid to service providers on their
properties, including painters, plumbers, accountants, etc. Track
all of these expenses in 2011 and report in January 2012.
2. Penalties for not filing 1099-MISC, misclassifying
workers as 1099 contractors and late filings will double for 2011.
3. A new 1099-K will be issued in 2011 by
Paypal and other credit card processing services to all clients
who use them for processing credit card payments. This is designed
to help improve the accuracy of information reporting and ensure
everyone is paying their fair share of taxes.
4. 1099MISC requirements may drastically
change in 2012 to include filing for all purchases of goods of $600+
to a single vendor, as well as extend reporting for corporations.
However, these requirements are being debated in Congress and will
likely change before the January 2012 start date. We're monitoring
this issue closely and will keep you updated through the coming
year.
